Aramco sued for death of 'beauty queen' camel

In what must rank as one of the most bizarre lawsuits ever filed against an oil and gas company, it has been reported that Saudi Aramco are being sued for US$267,000 for allegedly causing the death of a female camel that had taken part in a beauty pageant in the KSA.

The attractive three year-old black camel died in tragic circumstances after she fell into a hole in the desert that the Saudi hydrocarbons giant had dug and filled with crude oil.

Her heartbroken owner, Abdullah Al-Saiari, had entered the animal into the Camel Beauty Contest, a hotly contested event that attracts camel breeders from all over the KSA to show off their most eye-catching beasts.

The case is currently being brought before the court in Saudi Arabia.

there is common understanding that ARAMCO is legally above the law here, they are not restricted with the local workers visa quota, they hire females, females can drive their cars freely within its compounds and no one questions them, run their own movie theaters. if ARAMCO would pay it will be due to Public Relations reasons and not due to any legal case against them.

She is not a beast
Why camels are being called "beasts" in this report. it is very inaccurate and sarcastic. these are of the most beautiful and praised animal creatures in Islam, not beasts.

Safety norms
This demonstrate clearly how the Oil gaint not followed safety norms. where are the safety barricades and i have my own doubts, whether they have environmental agencies recomendations!! They preach too many things but do nothing; At the end poor camel had to pay for human mistakes.

Beauty Camel or Environmental awareness??
I think the court ruling on this particular accident is not the main concern; what is more important is to raise the awareness on environmental issues and the enforcement of environmental protection law in Saudi Arabia. This is crucial in order to safeguard and protect the beautiful desert and the valuable aquifers beneath. I lived in this beautiful country for few years; the amount of pollution and environmental damage is increasing at alarming pace. The government involvement must be revved up immediately.

Sad Story
Even the owner will win the case. They can not bring her back. I'm sure Aramco can do something about that. IF they don't want to pay, atleast search the whole kingdom for the same breed like "Olive". =(

What a sad story. It is inconceivable the courts will not rule in favour of Mr Abdullah Al-Saiari. To lose such a camel, toe and all, to a hydrocarbonic giant is a tragedy few would recover from.

The camel beauty contest is too much pressure for the animals... maybe it is better for her that she is dead, and not suffering anymore to be the most beautiful black camel.

It is highly unlikely that the owner of the camel, (Let's refer to her as Olive, since it's almost impossible to find the name) will win his case, but I hope he does. Black camels are more rare than white camels. Black dromedaries are bred for show and their beauty. Some places consider them to be adverse and bad luck,....bad luck in this case for the camel.
