Attracting the bright young things

by Kevin Baxter on Apr 29, 2009

As people working in the oil and gas industry get older many human resources departments are finding it difficult to attract the cream of young graduates to the energy sector.

Even in these troubed economic times it seems that the perception among young people is that the pros don't outweigh the cons when it comes to choosing a career in oil and gas.

What do you think needs to be done to attract the best young talent to the oil and gas industry and then keep them there?

Attracting the bright young things
my son was refused by oil company - by saying let him continue his studies- father working for 23 yrs. come on give me a break - undergraduates can be given training by the seniors of any company - we cannot ignore the the people who build the company -just they are growing old. same time -you cannot ignore the younger generation by saying "no experience" -

Attracting young local talent from within the Middle East will invariably go a long way in helping these economies to attain thier nationalization objectives. Fast-track courses with an element of on-the-job training (stipend) and immediate induction, followed by a career progression approach is the key. With the kind of oil prices, it's very much afforable too.

Talented?
My question in response to Ahmed is to ask, are these many people who want to work in Oil & Gas Trained already? Or want to be trained? Or just want to work in the industry? I think there is a massive shortage of people with the relevant education in the industry, engineers, scientists etc, especially the young. Perhaps this is due to ecological concerns and moral concerns about Oil and Gas? Or just misconceptions about the industry.. either way, it seems nothing is being done to educate people on this. What happens when the talent wells dry up before the Oil Wells?

Flexibility
Recruiter must be more flexible in order to attract young professionals, I mean they should avoid sticking to the prequisite of previous work experience in the same field and focus only on the type of knowledge that the young person had obtained.

Not a problem in this region
Are you referring to Westerners or people from the Middle East? Many young people want to work in the oil and gas industry in this region.

Perceptions
I work as a recruiter and the problem is that when people think of oil and gas they think of living in a compound in the middle of the Saudi desert. How many 21-year-olds want to do that? Young people need to be told that oil and gas can be an exciting and rewarding career decision.

Money
There has never been a better time to attract young graduates. There must be plenty of excellent science graduates who would usually be snapped up by the banks. What is being done to attract these people?
