Over 200 students from ADNOC Schools and Emirates National Schools in Abu Dhabi have shown an outstanding interest to be more involved with science-related subjects and curriculums having successfully attended more than 12 sessions of Borouge's 'Polymers on the Move' programme throughout the 2016 / 2017 academic year.

Held at the Borouge Innovation Centre in Sas Al Nakhl in Abu Dhabi, the bespoke science-based programme, specifically targeting 8th graders, provided the students with information on the benefits and nature of plastics and engaged them through interactive experiments and tours at the Innovation Centre on the useful and sustainable properties of plastics compared to other materials.

“Having students engaged in experiments at the Borouge Innovation Centre brings a fresh young dimension to the environment and emphasises that innovation of the future will stem from the bright minds we stimulate and educate today," said Abdulrahman Al Ateek, acting senior vice president, corporate affairs, Borouge.

"This programme is in line with the UAE vision 2021 to enhance STEM-based studies (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) that contribute to building a knowledge-based economy and we look forward to engaging with many students in the future. Participating in a full-day programme, the students are able to get hands on experience of not only plastics and the petrochemical industry, but on science as a whole," said Maitha Al Marashi, corporate social responsibility advisor, Borouge.

The programme was launched by Borouge in 2016 as part of the Borouge 2030 Strategy and the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) to further enhance involvement with the community, and encourage the learning of science amongst the youth so that they plan for future career opportunities in the oil and gas, and downstream petrochemicals and plastics industries.

The ‘Polymers on the Move’ programme involves the students in a number of presentations, workshops, scientific experiments and tour in the Borouge Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi to learn about Borouge’s innovations of polymers and experience a creative work environment.

“The session at the Borouge Innovation Centre has changed my mind and perception about plastics,” said Dania, one of the students who participated in the programme. “Learning science here is fun! I wish all our science classes at school were like this,” said Abdulla, another student.

“I learned a lot about polymers, and walking into the Borouge Innovation Centre feels like I am stepping into the future,” said another student. Salama, a student who participated in the programme, is hopeful that she would be working for Borouge 10 years from now.

Al Marashi pointed out that through the ‘Polymers on the Move’ programme, the students were able to experience science in a fun and interactive way, while enhancing their knowledge in different types of science.
